Carpenter's mate 2nd class Hubert F. Comer is one of five USS Rich crewmembers listed on the Wall of Missing memorial marker at Normandy Beach, France, dedicated in 1994 on the fiftieth anniversary of the the D-Day invasion.

    During one of the Rich's cruises, she struck a buoy which knocked a hole in her hull. Carpenters mate Comer managed to plug the hole with mattresses and plywood, allowing her to make port for repairs. His efforts saved the Rich allowing her to continue her service to her country.
