George Fryberger has been a member of a technical
message board (AnandTech) for about 2-1/2 years, and he routinely posts
articles about distributed computing and (from time to time) about
computer technology in general. There are around 100,000 members from many
countries around the world that belong to this on-line technical
community. George has become acquainted with people from France, Great
Britain, Australia, the Philippines, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Denmark,
and Germany as well as the US and Canada.
Karsten Laqua is a forum member, who was born in Germany and
recently immigrated to this country with his wife and children. They now
live in Atlanta. On the day before George left for the Rich reunion, he
posted a message explaining that he would be absent for several days and
would not be making his usual posts until returning, noting that he would
be attending the reunion for the USS Rich survivors. After learning where
George was going, Karsten sent the following message to be read at the
reunion.
Hey George,
Just saw your post about your vacation plans. If you do make it to the
reunion of the ship, would you please pass this on to the remaining
survivors:
To my American Friends a big "Thank You"! Thank You for the sacrifice
you and your whole generation has made. For if it where not for these
sacrifices, I could not write these lines right now!
This, today's world, where I, German born and 34 years old, had the
freedom to choose where to live and what to say. Enjoy the richness of
diversity the World and the USA has to offer. To live in the knowledge
that every man is equal and that I am always seen a human first. That I
learned to tolerate different opinions and are able to speak my mind
freely. Engage in discussion and accept other peoples views and
opinions.
Because, if it were not for the USA getting involved in the Second World
War and making these willing sacrifices, breaking Germany even though
the price to it's sons and daughters was great, I, as the person I am
today simply wouldn't be here! And Germany, at the very least, would not
be a free country.
Thank you for your personal sacrifices! Thank you for the legacy that
you left behind and made me a part of!
