Arlie Norris, S 2/c
    Some 90 miles off 1-40 near Cookeville, Tenn., in a mountainous area is Alpine, Tenn. Arlie Norris, S2/C, is buried there. He was a shipmate on the USS Rich and worked in the paint locker aboard ship. He died in 1977 from aggravated injuries sustained in the sinking of the Rich on June 8, 1944.

Ward Bowmer, S 2/c
    Approximately four miles from Alpine is Monroe, Tenn. Ward Bowmer, S 2/C, another Rich shipmate, is buried there. He died June 12, 1944, at age 20, from injuries received on the Rich. Both Norris and Bowmer were in Bainbridge, Maryland, training base along with several more shipmates who went on board the Rich. The company at Bainbridge was 4295.
